Atlanta Hardcourt Bike Polo Rules

  1. No feet down. If your foot touches the ground, you have to get out of the play immediately and go tap a designated spot with your mallet. (Typically there are two spots on the center line, one on each sideline).
  2. Play begins with a joust. Players line up behind their goal lines. There is a countdown: “Ready-Set-Polo!” (or “3-2-1-Polo!”).
  3. Full contact: bike to bike, mallet to mallet, body to body. But body-to-body action must be shoulder checking only. No grabbing another person (or his/her bike). It is OK to pin or hold a person’s mallet, but no mallet hacking.
  4. No T-boning a person with control of the ball. If someone has control of the ball, the defender can check, but cannot cut off the person with the ball. Blindside hits are frowned upon.
  5. Throwing mallets is not allowed.
  6. A goal must be hit with the end of the mallet. Shuffling the ball in with the wide side of the mallet does not count as a goal.
  7. After the scoring team reaches half-court, the other team may advance. The scoring team, now on defense, must wait until the offensive team, or ball, passes half court to attack.
  8. Have fun. Don't be a dick.

Scoring: Games are to five points.

Equipment: Any bike is okay. Any mallet is okay. The ball is a hollow street hockey ball. Liquid-filled balls are not used in the rink, but are allowed in some games around town.

Field: Hardcourt. Goals are a bike’s length wide, and not above the height of the boards.
